Life. Josef Sudek birth record 1896. Sudek was born in Kolín, Bohemia. He was originally a bookbinder. During the First World War he was drafted into the Austro-Hungarian Army in 1915 and served on the Italian Front until he was wounded in the right arm in 1916 which led to the limb being amputated at the shoulder.
From the 1930s onwards, his photographs were widely exhibited, with retrospectives at prestigious institutions such as George Eastman House, Rochester (1974), the International Center of Photography, New York (1977), and the Philadelphia Museum of Art (1990).
Dec 1, 2016 · It was in the 1970s that his work was first exhibited in the U.S., notably in a 1973 retrospective at George Eastman House in Rochester, N.Y. Active until his death in 1976 at age 80, Sudek was one of the few Czech photographers of his era to achieve world fame without emigrating.
Josef Sudek photography expertise was as a result of his interest in natural light. He loved watching the seasons and how sunshine passed through trees, threw shadows, and lit subjects. His early photos were surreal because of the soft, diffused light from trees or drapes.
After his first solo exhibition, in 1933, Sudek's work was shown alongside that of László Moholy-Nagy, Man Ray, and Alexander Rodchenko at the city's International Photography Exhibition in 1936.
