Jul 28, 2005 · On December 5, 1877, voters across Georgia reaffirmed Atlanta as the capital city of Georgia by a vote of 99,147 to 55,201. Two years later, in 1879, the legislature accepted Atlanta’s proposal and selected the city hall as the site for the new capitol. Today, it seems unimaginable that Georgia would move its capital city again.
Georgia, located at the crossroads of Western Asia and Eastern Europe, has a rich history marked by a strategic geographic position that has influenced its past. Its recorded history dates back to the 12th century BCE when it was part of the kingdom of Colchis, later merging with the kingdom of Iberia.
The Kingdom of Georgia flourished during the 11th and 12th centuries under rulers such as King David IV the Builder and Queen Tamar the Great. The kingdom fell to the Mongol invasion by 1243, and after a restoration under George V the Brilliant it fell again to the Timurid Empire in 1403.
Sep 25, 2009 · Established in 1732, with settlement in Savannah in 1733, Georgia was the last of the thirteen colonies to be founded. Its formation came a half-century after the twelfth British colony, Pennsylvania, was chartered (in 1681) and seventy years after South Carolina’s founding (in 1663).
For the first 43 years of Georgia’s existence, the cities that had been known as the capital were in the southeastern part of the state: Frederica and Savannah.
