Feb 4, 2024 · Akaka Falls, located on the Big Island of Hawaii, is a breathtaking testament to the island’s natural wonders, where a slender stream plunges 442 feet into a lush, verdant gorge below. As you stroll along the paved pathway through the tropical rainforest, the sound of rushing water grows louder, building anticipation for the awe-inspiring sight that awaits.
- Snorkeling in Kealakekua Bay. It’s all true – from the teeming, technicolor fish in knee-deep water, to the spinner dolphins lazily circling your kayak or catamaran.
- Mauna Kea star party. It is breathless and breath-taking in the rarefied air of Mauna Kea, Hawai’i’s most sacred location. Once the sun goes down, the stars come out, and with them telescopes for your viewing pleasure.
- Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. The eerie gray expanse of a formerly glowing lava lake, secluded palm-fringed beaches, ancient petroglyphs pecked into hardened lava and miles of hiking trails through craters, rainforest and desert – what’s not to love about Hawai‘i's No.1 site?
- Waipi’o Valley. Legends begin here, where the road ends overlooking this magical valley. You can linger at the scenic viewpoint, however the waterfalls, wild horses and wilder black-sand beaches tend to beckon explorers.
- Night Snorkel with Manta Rays. Imagine floating in the water, the lights below you attracting the plankton, and next thing you know giant, gentle Manta rays are swirling all around you, gliding through the water.
- Snorkel the Captain Cook Memorial and Kealakekua Bay. The suggestion is really not for the memorial itself, but the Kealakekua Bay – aka some of the best snorkeling on the Big Island of Hawaii.
- Snorkel at Two Step. For those who fancy more accessible snorkeling, drive to Two Step. There is limited parking right in front of the tide pools, or a paid parking lot, which costs five dollars.
- Walk through the Pu’uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park. Just a stone’s throw from Two Step, this historic park has plenty of exhibits that take you through Hawaiian culture and history.
First, head to the hottest spot on the island (pun intended) and tour Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. You'll need to cool off after all that fire, so head to some of the best waterfalls... or the beach, of course. And if you want the chance to do it all: hike, walk a black sand beach, kayak, and enjoy stunning views, the Waipio Valley awaits.
