Visitors experience what life was like during the war years with first hand stories brought to life with rare local photographs, archive video clips and a bombing simulation.

   • In 2016 Take Shelter opened its doors for the first time. Within the shelter the Take Shelter team have created a series of 1940s themed rooms and displays with rare local photos kindly loaned from Royal Pavilion & Museums and The Keep as well as film footage from Screen Archive South East.

   Where is the only school shelter open to the public?

   • Today the only school shelter open to the public is underneath a playground at Downs Junior School in Brighton. The shelter, or ‘trenches’ as it was known, are a series of interconnecting tunnels made from pre-cast concrete panels approximately 3 metres below the playground.

   When will the new take shelter entrance open?

   • The Take Shelter team have been fundraising for the last 5 years to build a new more accessible entrance to the shelter. We are thrilled to announce that all our hard work has paid off and, with the support of Downs Junior School and Brighton & Hove City Council, the new entrance opened in September 2022.
