The channel launched on March 4, 1988, as Sunshine Network, originally serving as an affiliate of Prime Network. The network was formed as a joint-venture of 11 cable companies and Home Sports Entertainment. [2] Later that year, Sunshine would obtain rights to broadcast the Orlando Magic in their inaugural season. [3]

Due to stress and tensions with other networks, and after the failure of Radiant, a merge of HappyTV and Spirit, the creator of HappyTV decided to officially pull the plug on the network on April 18, 2023, A day later, the creator had the idea to make Sunshine. This unfortunately caused some backlash, since they said they weren't going to stream again. Things got worse when the launch date was revealed: April 28, one week after HappyTV's shutdown. PowerMedia took to Twitter to talk about their Qubo revival, and how it took "effort and great quality" to prepare. A #BoycottSunshine event began, caused by the exposing of the network supporting Melanie Martinez, the network's idol, who was accused for sexual assault allegations. Most of the TwitchTV community tuned into Sunshine just to hatewatch and talk bad about the network, and not only that, raided the official discord server, and troll and bully the owner of the network, This lasted all night long. And this has also resulted the owner to go through suicide, thankfully surviving.
After the #BoycottSunshine event, Sunshine and the predecessor, HappyTV's Twitter accounts went deactivated. However, the Twitch and Instagram accounts are still active as well as the Discord server. Sunshine still continues to run to this day with no issues. Except for the drama that goes on outside of Sunshine's community.
On May 5, Sunshine made up for its launch day and launched that following night, with no issues happening there on. Sunshine at Night also launched on the network, with the first programming being Melanie Martinez's film K-12.
The network received a slight rebrand on January 5, 2024, while the network is planned to receive an entire refresh on May 20, 2024.
