Somerville College, a constituent college of the University of Oxford [3] in England, was founded in 1879 as Somerville Hall, one of its first two women's colleges. Among its alumnae have been Margaret Thatcher , Indira Gandhi , Dorothy Hodgkin , Iris Murdoch , Philippa Foot , Vera Brittain and Dorothy L. Sayers .
Somerville is known for its good food, excellent formals and beautiful central gardens, where students get together to study and socialise in the summer months. The college has one of the best undergraduate libraries in Oxford, containing more than 120,000 items, available to our students 24/7.
Somerville is a College for all. It was founded in 1879 to provide an opportunity for women, who at that time were still excluded from membership of the University, to benefit from higher education in Oxford.
