PITSMOOR, a chapelry in Brightside-Bierlow township, Sheffield parish, W. R. Yorkshire; suburban to Sheffield, and 1 mile N of the centre of the town. It was constituted in 1845; and its post town is Sheffield.
Pitsmoor was just a hamlet through which the main turnpike road ran from Sheffield to Barnsley and Wakefield. Industry in the area was mostly in the form of small workshops, attached to farm buildings, producing knives and tools for a local market.

Pitsmoor was described as eminently respectable and a languorous and soothing suburb, in an article in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph in 1906. A few years later Abbeyfield House and its grounds were donated to the city council.
