The first operational English Electric Lightning variant, designated Lightning F.1, was designed as an interceptor and to best perform this mission, emphasis was placed on rate-of-climb, acceleration, and speed, rather than range and so a radius of operation of 150 miles (240 km) from the V bomber airfields was the initial requirement.

The English Electric Lightning was the first and only all-British-designed and manufactured interceptor/fighter capable of achieving supersonic speeds in level flight. It was retired from frontline service in April 1988, but the aircraft can still conjure up a misty eye among those interested in aviation history.
It featured a Rolls-Royce Derwent centrifugal-flow turbojet engine, with a maximum thrust of 75.7 kN (7,720 kgp / 3,500 lbf), and fixed tricycle landing gear. The wings were designed to allow the sweep to be modified by ground crew.
