Gallacher was born in Bellshill, Lanarkshire in 1903. He started "biffing a twopenny ball" almost as soon as he could walk. [1] He began a long friendship with Alex James when both were students at Bellshill Academy. [6] His Irish father had moved to Scotland in search of work in the vast coal mining areas the country had to offer.
These were built from 1902–30, with the largest 10 metres in diameter and 18 metres high – it was known as Big Ben. Nov 26, 2022 · Billy’s widow Liz and the extended McNeill family travelled through to Bellshill today and at around 1.30 pm Liz did the honours unveiling a brilliant statue in memory of Bellshill’s finest, the Lisbon Lion skipper Billy McNeill. Well done to the committee and all involved in making this happen. Outstanding work.
