The Monument-National is an historic Canadian theatre located at 1182 Saint Laurent Boulevard in Montreal, Quebec. With a capacity of over 1,600 seats, the venue was erected between 1891 and 1894 (130 years ago) and was originally the cultural centre of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society.

Jul 22, 2012 · A true multi-ethnic centre, the Monument-National, supported by the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste, was used by Montréal's growing Jewish community. From 1896-1956 it was the major venue for Yiddish theatre outside New York, although presenting only American productions.
From the moment of its inauguration in 1893, in the heart of what was in the process of becoming the Jewish district, the Monument-National established itself as a hotbed of creativity, innovation, debate and performance that made it one of the most important multiethnic community and cultural centres in America.
Built in Montreal in 1893, the Monument-National was for decades an essential stop for the great French, English, and Yiddish vaudevillians, as well as stars like Edith Piaf, Emma Albani, and Maurice Schwartz.
