Dec 18, 2021 · My question is to avoid ambiguity between Kestler's term 'HOLON' and Greek word "ὅλον'". I think Kestler's 'HOLON' should be original term, but the English wikipedia page leads a confution that HOLON is "ὅλον" in Greek (= 'whole' ), but whole is apprently not HOLON, so I wonder how Kestler's HOLON is translated into Greek actually.

The Ancient Greek word ἡμιόλιος means literally "one and a half", referring to the ratio 3:2 and the interval of a perfect fifth in music. I wonder how this word is composed of: is it ἡμι- (half) + ὅλος (whole) or ἡμι- (half) + ὀλίγος (few) ?
Oct 10, 2020 · How is 'holon'(ὅλον)(philosophy word) different from 'whole' in Greek? Philosophy word 'Holon'(in English) is translated to 'ὅλον' in Greek as the wikipedia page says. On the other side, 'Whole'(in English) is also tanslated to ὅλον at Aristotle's Metaphysics.
Aug 25, 2024 · ἱερῆς, ἐγὼ μὲν Ζηνός. As you can see, the word that Fagles translates as "God" is actually "Zeus" (in the genitive). That said, you do see a singular θεός used in Greek where English translators often (but not always) translate with "God." This is typical when there's not a specific deity in mind.

It is likely that the author (Burgesse) changed the order to the more usual postpositive. In addition, he switched the infinitive from aorist (γενέσθαι) to present (γί [γ]νεσθαι).

Dec 28, 2023 · I'm relatively certain it's a demonym derived from Lycōreia (Λυκώρεια), a town in Phokis. The suggestion may not be that she was actually from there, but just that she was Greek and Lycoreia is a place in Greece; Cythēris, too, is originally a demonym from Cythēra as well as an epithet of Aphrodite.

Is the epsilon (ε) truly more fitting as a Greek transliteration of the first letter of the word "Allah" (as pronounced in Arabic)? Wouldn't starting with epsilon render the pronunciation of the rest of the word incorrect as in Arabic the second alpha ...
