When 24 ended its run four years ago, the once-mighty series had grown too familiar, even a bit stale. By Season 8, the strain of filling so many hours in real time had taken its toll and the show’s creative team, the network and maybe even fans agreed that it was time to take a step back. After a few years of rumors and false starts on a feature film, Jack Bauer returns to TV once again this Monday, but with a few tweaks to the formula. There’s not just a change in location -- this time Jack pops up in London with a big target on his back in order to foil yet another terrorist plot -- but the 24-hour period will now be covered in 12 real-time episodes, meaning we'll jump ahead in-between episodes at some points of the season. Time will tell, but this has sounded like a great idea since its announcement. Having long since proven that they can indeed fill 24 episodes with action, cutting it in half gives the creators the chance to cut the fat and deliver a lean, mean ride. If the opening episodes are any indication, that’s exactly what they’ve done.

    Ranking the 24 Seasons

Now despised by his government and the world at large for what they believe were his psychotic/traitorous actions at the close of Season 8, Bauer’s a man without a country or anything else, for that matter. What becomes apparent over the course of this opening hour is that while the kick-ass Jack Bauer is still very much alive, he is also a thoroughly broken man. “I don’t have any friends,” he says at one point, and if that’s true then we’re left to wonder why he’s bothering with any of this. Jack’s done confiding in or trusting anybody after years of getting burned over and over again, but that’s left him a shell of his former self, going through the motions because that’s just what he does.

Sometimes lost in all the 24 hype about what an intense roller coaster it is and the action hero baddassery of Jack Bauer is just how good Kiefer Sutherland has always been in this role. Never feeling off in any given scene, he’s always the one keeping the series grounded and infusing it with intensity. Just look at his performance in the opening moments of the pilot or Seasons 4 and 8 and you see a relaxed, calm Bauer enjoying life (and I’m pretty sure those are the three moments in the entire run of the show like that. He’s had a rough ride). Beyond that, it’s always been go time, and Sutherland keeps finding different gears for Jack, never becoming repetitive or monotonous.

Another addition to the show is the CIA’s London station with several new players. Benjamin Bratt is Steve Navarro, head of the station, trying to manage the business of the day while agent Kate Morgan (Yvonne Strahovski from Chuck and Dexter) runs out the clock on her last week. Having been disgraced after missing that her husband was selling state secrets, Kate’s being kicked to the curb while Erik Ritter (Gbenga Akkinagbe-- Chris from The Wire!) impatiently waits to take her place. Everyone’s established as being excellent at what they do, if not quite on the same level as the legendary Jack Bauer. Knowing this show, the odds are good that somebody here is a traitor, but for now the action keeps us too busy to reflect on that.

As it has in previous seasons, the show takes its cue from the real world before running with it, this time involving controversial drone programs and classified materials going public. 24 is also famous for torture, and they don’t shy away from it this time either. Even Jack himself seems to show the strain and lashes out when he has it thrown back in his face that it’s nothing he hasn't done himself. Of course it’s just a TV show whose primary goal is to provide entertainment, but it’s refreshing to see that they’re not dealing in absolutes and everyone from Jack to the president can see the grey areas.

But 24 is first and foremost a thriller that needs to live up to its own standards, and these opening episodes deliver the goods. To get specific about the circumstances would spoil the fun, but suffice to say that no time is wasted before we get to see Jack back in action and wreaking havoc in ways both clever and brutal. On a human level he may be a shell of his former self, but as a man of action he’s still Jack freakin’ Bauer, and his reputation precedes him.

    5 Reasons Jack Bauer Rules

The first hour is a welcome reminder of the show’s strengths -- terrific, compact action sequences, sketchy presidential advisers and the high-stakes office politics of the CIA -- are all on display here. The weaknesses of the series -- far-fetched shifting loyalties and detours with no bearing on the main crisis -- are absent (so far). The different structure of this “day” seems like it would be a huge advantage for the writers this time around. By having only half the episodes of a normal 24 season there’s bound to be far less filler and the premiere has none.

From its long history we know that a day in 24 can go in almost any direction, quality-wise, but this one’s starting out with tight focus and intensity that bodes well for the season. With compelling new and old characters they’re off to one of the series’ best starts and the shortened schedule promises to keep everything lean. Just about everyone in the show may not be happy about it, but it’s great to have Jack back.

Not only is 24 not showing any rust -- or at the least, it had time to get rid of the rust it had built up by Season 8 -- but they are diving right in with a premiere episode that would fit right in with the best hours of the original run.
