May 12, 2021 · There is a genuine ambiguity in 'They elected her secretary': it could mean they elected her as the secretary, or they elected her secretary as something (president/treasurer). This is because 'her' can be accusative or genitive. With a different pronoun, we see them as clearly distinct: They elected him secretary. [he became secretary]
Jan 9, 2009 · Oh, sort of, yes. You need a bit more of a connector for the sentence to work though. "Both of the secretary's vacations caused a delay in output." The plural of "son-in-law" is "sons-in-law"; "son-in-laws" is incorrect. Thus, the possessive of the plural would be "the sons-in-law's opinions".
