Tongue-tie (also called ankyloglossia)is when a tight piece of skin connects the underside of a baby's tongue and the floor of their mouth. It can sometimes make it harder for them to breastfeed. It can be treated by a quick procedure called tongue-tie division.
We provide surgery for babies aged 12 weeks and under who need tongue-tie division so that they can breastfeed.
Your midwife, health professional or trained peer support who can assess tongue-tie and breastfeeding will refer you to our tongue-tie clinic. Our booking clerk will contact you and offer you an appointment.
To cancel or change your appointment, email gst-tr.EvelinaTongueTieClinic@nhs.net Please tell us as soon as possible so we can offer the appointment to another patient.
Please do not feed your baby 2 hours before your clinic visit. We'll give you a time slot and you'll be seen within 30 minutes.
The clinic is led by a consultant surgeon, a midwife and a supporting nurse. We'll have a conversation with you about you and your baby.
Follow on care will be provided by the person who referred you to our service or by your local community. Find out more about feeding your baby on the Guy's and St Thomas' website.
We do not accept referrals for: 1. infants older the 3 months 2. symptoms other than feeding difficulties 3. no desire to breast feed
