Been playing on Galaxy since last September, and in my experience players as low as 1400-1500 are often good at 1-point matches (sometimes even getting a "Superhuman" or "Galactic" rating), but struggle with the cube and longer matches (how to adjust their playing at various scores, etc.).

Aug 1, 2023 · In v1, as long as you played better, you would never drop rating. This is obviously different from pre-bot backgammon, where there was no way of quantifying skill vs luck. For better or worse (I think for better), the old rating system was a way of mitigating the chaotic nature of backgammon.
Dec 6, 2021 · Nextgammon is superior to Backgammon Galaxy. As much as I like the BG layout and interface, Nextgammon is a much more realistic playing experience. the dice algorithm is unmatched. on BG I wanted to pull my hair out every time I played because of the sketchy dice rolling, doubles constantly, and uber-convenient situational rolls.
Apr 13, 2022 · Both have their merits, both have their issues. On balance I prefer Heros, I don't like galaxy graphics, and heroes is too chaotic. I play on both platforms for tourneys only. My home for practice/casual play is Gridgammon and FIBS. Heroes is far superior for everything other than picking up an instant opponent.

The app is populated by mostly casual players (I've encountered only 2 players so far who played single digit PR), and they clearly prefer shorter simpler matches. Jan 16, 2024 · FM Gammon sells two different "mini" boards for $250. They are the exact same dimensions as the Adventure board with the same build quality (FM builds the Adventure Boards for Galaxy) but about half the price. The only big difference is the colors and that it doesn't come with the checker box, only a drawstring bag.
Dec 5, 2020 · Backgammon Galaxy is certainly geared to match and tournament play, and the fact that it’s analysis engine rates moves by equity lost or gained is part of the package. My suggestion is to stop focusing on your rating and focus instead on improving your typical PR in a match. That includes both checker play and cube play.
