Oh, what a difference an R-rating can make when stomping through the well-worn grounds of romantic comedy territory.

About Last Night, a remake of the 1986 film of the same name — itself a loose adaptation of David Mamet's play Sexual Perversity in Chicago — is one of the funniest, foul-mouthed, and brutally honest rom-coms in recent memory. Director Steve Pink (Hot Tub Time Machine) and writer Leslye Headland (Bachelorette, Terriers) clash the male and female relationship experiences with crude delight, evoking the leisurely naturalism of '60s comedies like Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice and, more recently, romances of the indie ilk. With Katherine Heigl and Nicolas Sparks dominating the genre over the past half-decade, About Last Night arrives as a glimmer of hope.

Danny (Michael Ealy) and Bernie (Kevin Hart) are best friends, co-workers, and single gents on the prowl (Bernie has a more vulgar euphemism for it, but... this is a family-friendly web site). The latter is the driving force of their quest; Danny, still working through his break-up with dominating girlfriend Alison, isn't ready to dive into the dating pool. Bro code keeps him by his sex-hungry buddy's side. When they meet up with Joan (Regina Hall), Bernie's most recent obsession, Danny finds himself smitten for the first time in a year by her roommate Debbie (Joy Bryant). After Bernie and Joan scurry away for a drunken hook-up in the bathroom, Danny and Debbie drop their reserved acts, exposing themselves as simpatico. A perfect night leads to more perfect nights leads to perfect days leads to the makings of a long-term relationship that neither expect. Or, perhaps, want.

About Last Night is steeped in conversation: the ones we only have with our partners, our best friends, or the bartender down the street. It's a welcome diversion from the usual hijinks, made an absolute pleasure by the mashing up the earnest Ealy and Bryant with the comedic tour-de-force of Hart and Hall. Having worked with each other in movies like Think Like a Man, there's a built-in rapport that's enhanced by Headland's ear for intimate language.

About Last Night is a welcome change of pace for the romantic comedy genre, an update of the Mamet play where people are allowed to communicate frankly and realistically. It also offers plenty of laughs, thanks to cast members Kevin Hart and Regina Hall.
