Zalman Yanovsky was born December 19, 1944 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He is the son of political cartoonist, Avrom Yanovsky and Nechama Gemeril. Zal's mother died when he was still a child. He was a self-taught musician and dropped out of school at the age of 16 and began playing folk songs in coffeehouses.

Zalman "Zal" Yanovsky (December 19, 1944 – December 13, 2002) was a Canadian rock musician. Born in Toronto, he was the son of political cartoonist Avrom Yanovsky. He played lead guitar and sang for the Lovin' Spoonful, a rock band which he founded with John Sebastian in 1964.
Zalman ‘Zal’ Yanovsky was a founder-member of The Lovin’ Spoonful, one of the best-loved, most fondly-recalled of North American pop bands of the mid-1960s. As their lead guitarist, he added deft musical colourations to their sound, being able to effortlessly jump styles.
