[now Gagarin, Russia]—died March 27, 1968, near Moscow) was a Soviet cosmonaut who in 1961 became the first man to travel into space. In 1955, Gagarin attended the Orenburg Military Pilot’s School. Apparently, he twice-struggled to land a MiG-15 aircraft, nearly causing his dismissal.
