In season 1 I felt so bad when she communicated with Ian that she wasn't ready to go back to work and he pressured her into it to follow his own dream. Her downward spiral started from there, and they flanderized her throughout the series to become this over-the-top, almost comical villain.
The show is workin moms, but there is very little meaningful time spent between the moms and their kids. Whenever Alice appears onscreen it’s like ugh, what is it going to be now. I wish they’d spend more time on Anne and Lionel. There also seemed to be zero consequences for Alice being hugely inappropriate with Anne’s patient. Wtf was that about?!
