Woolwich (/ ˈwʊlɪtʃ, - ɪdʒ /) is a town in southeast London, England, within the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The district's location on the River Thames led to its status as an important naval, military and industrial area; a role that was maintained throughout the 16th to 20th centuries.
Woolwich is located in the county of Greater London, London, seven miles east of the city of City of London, 18 miles west of the major town of Basildon, and nine miles east of London. Woolwich lies six miles north-west of the Kent border, and was historically in the county of Kent.
