Geography. The town is situated within the Lavanttal Alps, west of the Koralpe range in the valley of the Lavant River, a left tributary of the Drava. In the northeast, the road up to the Packsattel mountain pass connects Wolfsberg with Voitsberg in Styria. Wolfsberg's municipal area of 279 km 2 (108 sq mi) is the fourth largest in Austria.
In 1846, the industrial pioneer, Hugo Henckel von Donnersmarck, acquired the barony of Wolfsberg, mainly because of its wealth of wood and hydropower, which he needed to operate his iron works. He converted the castle from 1847 to 1853 into a palace in the English Tudor style using the two Viennese architects Johann Romano and August Schwendenwein and had a lavishly decorated interior built.
Town in paradise. The urban municipality of Wolfsberg has a historic old town with numerous places of interest, such as St Mark’s Church or Wolfsberg Castle. The natural paradise of the Koralpe, Klippitztörl and Saualpe offers a wide variety of leisure facilities in both summer and winter, and plenty of space for recreation.

Wolfsberg was a bastion for them and resisted the regular army of Austria for quite some time. During WWII, Wolfsberg had a camp for 7,000 prisoners of war; this camp was later used by the allies to imprison former Nazi officials and collaborators. It was passed over to the Austrian government only in 1948.
