Brief Synopsis. The story is set in the early 1800s in Charleston, South Carolina. Sarah Grimké, a young girl from a wealthy family, is presented with Hetty "Handful" Grimké, a slave, as her eleventh birthday gift.
Summary. Analysis. Hetty Handful Grimké. The novel begins with Handful ’s “Mauma” (Charlotte), a slave, telling Handful (the narrator) that in Africa people used to be able to fly, but they lost their wings when they came to America. Handful knows this isn’t true, but loves the story anyway.
