In addition to Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley, Chaos Walking also features an ensemble cast that includes Mads Mikkelsen, Demián Bichir, Cynthia Erivo, Nick Jonas, Kurt Sutter, and David Oyelowo.
For his part, Mikkelsen sees Prentiss and his followers as ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, with Prentiss emblematic of people who "sit on power for way too long. It becomes self-evident that they are always right. But I believe that he started out with good intentions and I believe that he still believes that he has good intentions for the future of his people. So he can lead it, but that definitely has his way, and people who go against him, he is not fond of."
So what exactly did Daisy Ridley's character Viola do to set Prentiss off? "She's a woman. As simple as that," Mikkelsen revealed. "It basically starts out with a world full of men, and we understand the reason for that later on. It's not that he dislikes women at all, on the contrary, but there is an issue with women once they are on this planet, and that issue is unsolvable. And for that reason, she is that rotten apple that's going to destroy all the other apples."
The conceit of the Noise -- where only men's thoughts are projected for all to hear but not women's -- piqued the interest of both Ridley and Mikkelsen, with the actors recalling that even on set it remained unclear exactly how director Doug Liman was going to pull it off.
"It was a tricky thing to work with because obviously at that point, there were a lot of ideas how we should manifest it in the film, but nothing was set in stone at that point," Mikkelsen explained. "So, we had to address it with kind of different approaches, maybe a couple of different takes in order for us to be saving on the editing table later on."
Ridley recalled that while they were filming "we had Doug shouting wherever the Noise was, so the Noise was scripted, and Doug would literally just shout across the scene." Ridley understands, just from filming those scenes, how the Noise in real-life "would drive people crazy" and she feels like there's no time like the present for such a concept to resonate with audiences.
"Everybody tweets what they think, and everybody shares what they had for breakfast. I think now is really the closest time that humans may ever be to understanding what the Noise is, because it used to be you don't share all of that," said Ridley. "In Chaos Walking, it is suffocating to constantly know what other people are thinking. There's no mystery."
Chaos Walking is a 2021 American dystopian science-fiction action-thriller film [5] directed by Doug Liman and written by Patrick Ness and Christopher Ford. It is based on Ness's science fiction trilogy Chaos Walking, adapting its first book, 2008's The Knife of Never Letting Go.
