    There are different types of sections, each with different rules to keep you in hospital such as section 2, 3, 5(2), 5(4). The length of time that you can be kept in hospital depends on which section you are detained under.

    You may be sectioned if concerns about your mental health have been raised or if your doctor thinks it is necessary for assessment or treatment due to a mental disorder or risk to safety. Before being lawfully sectioned, an assessment by health professionals must take place first.
