St David, Dewi Sant, was a leading figure and monk in the early Welsh Church who lived in this area in the sixth century. Bishops Palace as it appears today. Under Bishop Gower (1328–1347) the cathedral was modified further, with the rood screen and the Bishops Palace intended as permanent reminders of his episcopacy; the palace is now a picturesque ruin. In 1365, Bishop Adam Houghton and John of Gaunt began to build St Mary's College and a chantry.
The church building provided shelter for soldiers of both sides. St. David’s was represented in 1784 at the first General Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States. The incorporation and charter of the church followed in August, 1792.
