Justinian knew all about empires diminished in prosperity, churches and buildings destroyed by fire, and doctrinal disputes threatening the peace of Christendom. Justinian was born around AD 482 to a peasant family in Macedonia, north of Greece.
Justinian’s gesture of carrying the bowl with the bread of the Eucharist can be seen as an act of homage to the True King who appears in the adjacent apse mosaic.
