First organized as a county in 1809, Baldwin County found itself situated within the confines of the Mississippi Treaty until December 10, 1817, when the State of Mississippi entered the United States of America as the Twentieth (20th) State in the Federal Union.
Baldwin County was established on December 21, 1809, [1] ten years before Alabama became a state. Previously, the county had been a part of the Mississippi Territory until 1817, when the area was included in the separate Alabama Territory. Statehood was gained by Alabama in 1819.
It was during the period of boundary disputes and an agreement following the American Revolution that Baldwin County itself was formed, on December 21, 1809, making it older than the state itself. One of the most striking periods of Baldwin County history occurred during the War of 1812.
Created by the Mississippi Territorial Legislature and carved out of a portion of Washington County, Baldwin County was organized at the County Seat at McIntosh Bluff on December 21, 1809, during the days when it fell within the confines of the Mississippi Territory.
