  1. Nov 19, 2020 · Belgium is regarded as a safe place to live and visit. According to Global Peace Index rankings, Belgium is in the top 20 for the most peaceful country in Europe, known for its stable political system, high standard of living, peaceful coexistence between cultural communities and low crime rate.

    • Picturesque towns. There are many romantic towns with beautiful architecture to discover in Belgium. The medieval city of Bruges is probably the most famous one and it’s also one of my favourite cities in Belgium.
    • Wallonia & The Ardennes. Wallonia and the Belgian Ardennes are situated in the south of the country, and they’re completely different from the north. If you’re a lover of the outdoors, this is probably the part of Belgium that you will love the most.
    • Castles and ruins. One of my favourite things about Belgium is its large amount of castles and citadels. It’s said that Belgium has more castles per capita than France!
    • The comic book culture. If you’re into comic books, you will LOVE Belgium. It was here that The Smurfs, The Adventures of Tintin, Spike and Suzy and many other comics were born.
    • Understand Belgium’s two main regions. First thing’s first, it’s important that you understand one of the more unique features of Belgium: the clear divide between its two main areas: Flanders in the North and Wallonia in the South – each with their own language.
    • Beware that most places have a different name in French and in Flemish. Given these different languages, one of the most important things you need to know as a visitor is that destinations in Belgium will have different names in French and Flemish.
    • Don’t spend all your time in Brussels. One of the most fatal mistakes that first time visitors make in Belgium is they only visit Brussels. Allow me to indulge in some aggressive through-the-screen shoulder shaking.
    • That said, if you do go to Brussels, do it properly. Brussels is often named among the most disappointing cities in Europe, and while I did agree with this claim once upon a time, I now find it kind of unfair.
    • Belgium is cheap compared to other Western European countries. Look at this happy guy in Bruges. You’d think that the presence of the headquarters of the EU would make Belgium a very expensive country, but it’s in fact not that bad.
    • You rarely need cash. Money, money, money... You can pay by card everywhere except for maybe some tiny shops or souvenir shops. Even on public transportation you can usually pay not only with cards, but also your phone or smart watch.
    • DON’T rent a car in Belgium. This time I recommend travelling by train. Not only does the parking in popular Belgian cities suck (time limits on central parking, residential-only parking spots) and cost a fortune, the trains are just so good.
    • DO travel by train in Belgium. The train station in Antwerp is one of the nicest in Europe! Belgian trains are comfortable, cheap, and fast as lightning.
    • Belgian cities. Ghent. If you decide to visit Ghent by train I suggest you get off at Sint Pieters train station and take the tram right to the Korenmarkt.
    • Nature. Ardennes & High Fens. Belgium isn’t all about the cities. You can find beautiful nature as well. I love to hike at the Ardennes, which is the eastern region consisting of extensive forests and gentle hills.
    • The food. If you like good food, you’ll love Belgium! Not only can you find so many excellent restaurants here, Belgians are known for a lot of sweet treats such as Belgian Waffles, Belgian Chocolates, Neuzekes, Babelutten, Smoutebollen, Pies,… You may not be a fan of Brussels Sprouts, but who doesn’t like ham and endive (Belgians call it witlof) gratin, a traditional oven dish?
    • The alcohol. There are around 1150 original Belgian beers so if you’re a beer lover, there’s no doubt you need to visit Belgium. My favorite is the sweet Liefmans on the Rocks!
  2. Dec 11, 2018 · A handful of Belgium travel tips aren’t going to have you completely reworking your itinerary and save you from grievous harm. Still, even with somewhere like Belgium, you need to prepare a little before you go. It is another country after all, with its own quirks and foibles.
