- Medieval towns. Just about anywhere you go in Belgium, you’ll bump into a picturesque village, town or city that will give you an idea how the Middle Ages must have looked like in the region.
- A peeing boy as a national landmark. Everyone visiting Brussels wants to take a look at Manneke Pis – a tiny statue of a peeing boy. And while it’s a bit anticlimactic when you finally see it, it’s a great example of the Belgian mentality.
- Castles. From imposing to fairytale feeling, with over 400 castles you’ll definitely find one to your liking. And with more castles per square kilometer than any of our neighbouring countries, you never have to drive far to bump into one.
- Travel friendly. As you can get from one side of Belgium to the other in 2,5 hours at the longest point, it’s safe to say that the country is very travel friendly.
- Brussels. Best for shopping, museums and street food. Brussels, the capital of Belgium and seat of the EU and NATO, is one of Europe’s most multicultural cities.
- Namur Province. Best for forts, nature and river views. Known as the “Land of Valleys”, the land-locked province of Namur in the Wallonia region is rich in nature – rivers, cliffs, rolling farm hills and lush Ardennes greenery.
- Bruges. Best for wandering and romantic escapes. A visit to Bruges feels like stepping into a fairy tale. Often called the Venice of the North, the city is incredibly charming with an intricate network of tree-lined canals, cobblestone streets and well-preserved architecture.
- Antwerp. Best for fashion and design. Home to the world-renowned Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, Belgium’s second city is also its coolest. Some of fashion’s top creatives, including Martin Margiela and Balenciaga’s Demna Gvasalia, have connections to Antwerp.
- Understand Belgium’s two main regions. First thing’s first, it’s important that you understand one of the more unique features of Belgium: the clear divide between its two main areas: Flanders in the North and Wallonia in the South – each with their own language.
- Beware that most places have a different name in French and in Flemish. Given these different languages, one of the most important things you need to know as a visitor is that destinations in Belgium will have different names in French and Flemish.
- Don’t spend all your time in Brussels. One of the most fatal mistakes that first time visitors make in Belgium is they only visit Brussels. Allow me to indulge in some aggressive through-the-screen shoulder shaking.
- That said, if you do go to Brussels, do it properly. Brussels is often named among the most disappointing cities in Europe, and while I did agree with this claim once upon a time, I now find it kind of unfair.

- The Grand Place, Brussels. It’s a marvel of architectural theatre, the historic centrepiece of one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities, and glitteringly ornate.
- Getting there is so easy. By car over the Channel and then a short hop; or by plane. But, easiest of all, by Eurostar to Brussels Midi station, and from there by rail to anywhere you like in Belgium.
- Cities to wander in. Brussels, Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp (and all the others) are small enough to walk to just about everywhere you might want to go. It’s a measure of the human scale on which Belgium works.
- Sweet self-deprecation. When the Belgians were told recently that their national football team had reached No.1 in the FIFA world rankings they couldn’t believe it, or assumed that it couldn’t mean much.
