Mortal Instruments doesn't interest me too much, but I have been thinking about giving Infernal Devices a try instead. Its a prequel trilogy to Mortal Instruments and from what I hear it is also way better (plus 3 books is easier to read than 6).
The mortal Instruments Instruments isn't my favourite, not even close, but you should definitely read it before moving on to the more beautiful and heartbreaking ones like the infernal devices, and the dark artifices.
I gave up reading Mortal Instruments after the third book I just didn't understand the hype around it. If anything read The Infernal Devices it is amazing and definitely worth reading.

Court Buman read the mortal instruments first, then read the infernal devices. It's true there are hints but the infernal devices of The clockwork angel interfears with Book #4 of TMI Clockwork Prince interfears with Book#5 and Clockwork princess interfears with City of Heavenly Fire.
