Titian, the greatest Italian Renaissance painter of the Venetian school. He was recognized early in his own lifetime as a supremely talented painter, and his reputation has in the intervening centuries never suffered a decline. A few of his best-known works include Venus of Urbino and Assumption.

Titian was the greatest painter of 16th-century Venice, and the first painter to have a mainly international clientele. During his long career, he experimented with many different styles of painting which embody the development of art during his epoch.

Tiziano Vecellio (ca. 1485/90?–1576), known as Titian, was the greatest Venetian artist of the sixteenth century, eventually gaining international fame. Titian is known above all for his remarkable use of color ; his painterly approach was highly influential well into the seventeenth century.
Titian's greatness as an artist, it appears, was not matched by his character, for he was notoriously avaricious. In spite of his wealth and status, he claimed he was impoverished, and Erwin Panofsky comments that ‘his tax declaration of 1566…would land him in jail today’.
By the 1550’s, Titians reputation had spread beyond Venice and for the last two decades of his career, Phillip II of Spain became his most important patron. Over a ten-year period, Titian created a cycle of six large scale mythological paintings for Phillip, known as the poesie.
