The new cast had nearly impossible high expectations to fulfill, but delivered well and was suprisingly likeable. The (in my opinion) good writing helped a lot with this for sure. The idea to set it a completely new galaxy was bold, but paid off, as they had as lot of freedom plotwise.

Like SG1, Atlantis is VERY self-deprecating and pokes fun at itself constantly. That being said, contrary to SG1's almost 4th wall breaking jokes, plotline and banter, Atlantis achieves a balance between the show's seriousness (and sometimes darkness) and its humor.
