I am up to date with the series and it still kinda weirds me out that people like Piper. This past season was better for her, but she's so stereotypical upper-middle class white lady (I am white) that I cringe so hard whenever she is on screen, and she's just so annoying.
Piper Kerman noted in her memoir that if she didn't have access to top quality legal representation, she would be in much the same position as many of the other inmates. It's not just being white: it's being white and at least upper middle class and able to pay for private representation.
That's why Piper hates Soso, she sees some young naïve person who is "above" prison life. If they drop the Alex/Larry love story and focus on her growth as an individual I'll see her character as being more of a favorite.
