Urbanna is a town in Middlesex County, Virginia, United States. Urbanna means “City of Anne” and was named in honor of England's Queen Anne. [5] The population was 476 at the 2010 census.
It was the Nimcocks who first settled what would come to be known as Urbanna. Nimcock means “Indians who live in towns.” The Nimcocks lived in huts in fenced villages designed to thwart attack.
Urbanna was one of the twenty towns created by an act passed by the Colonial House of Burgesses in 1680 to encourage the creation of port towns that would open trade with the Colonies. The town was officially named Urbanna in 1706.
Originally settled by the Nimcocks, “Indians Who Live In Towns”, this small town on the Rappahannock River became know as Urbanna in 1704 in honor of Queen Anne of England. The Town became a bustling center for Tobacco Trade.
Urbanna was incorporated on April 2, 1902, comprising an area of 0.49 square miles (1.27 square kilometers). The Town of Urbanna remains the county's largest commercial center and its only incorporated area but the county seat of government has moved to the Village of Saluda on U.S. Route 17.
