By 1980, the wildlife park was renamed the ‘Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park’. This was Steve’s home and the place he loved the most. Here he worked countless hours, caring for the wildlife and maintaining the grounds.
As the popularity of The Crocodile Hunter grew, Steve and Terri changed the name of their now growing wildlife park to ‘Australia Zoo’. Their mission was to make this zoo the very best in Australia, if not the world! Extensive efforts were made to create habitats, so that all zoo animals could be exhibited in natural environments.

Aug 12, 2014 · Then called the Beerwah Reptile and Fauna Park, it was a small, family affair run by Steve Irwin’s father, Bob, and his mum Lyn, and was primarily made up of animals rescued by the Irwins. In 1992 they handed the reins to Steve and his new bride Terri.
Called The Old Irving Park Association, the group has several active committees and hosts several social functions each year. While Irving Park is now thriving, it has not been without its hard times. All but one of the original mansions, the Stephen A. Race Mansion, have been demolished.
Australia Zoo was opened by Bob and Lyn Irwin on 3 June 1970 under the name Beerwah Reptile and Fauna Park. Their son Steve had helped his parents since childhood to care for crocodiles and reptiles and to maintain the growing number of animals in the zoo.
