In the 1830's Hanley was considered 'a large modern town', the largest in the Potteries and the second in Staffordshire; its streets 'generally spacious and well paved', its houses of 'neat appearance, and some of them, as well as the public edifices . . . spacious and elegant'.

Mar 2, 2016 · As you all know, it is incredibly challenging to find reliable sources for the history of Lane furniture. While this booklet isn’t all-inclusive, it’s a great start and I’m very pleased to share it with you. Let’s dive into the first decade of the company’s history, relayed to us by the master himself: Edward Hudson Lane.
Early History. The name Hanley comes from the old English han leah, meaning a high clearing, the first settlement developing along what is now Church End. There is some evidence of a Roman fort by the river at the end of Quay Lane, where there used to be an important wharf, and of a Roman temple on the site of St Mary’s church.

Hanley existed as a vill in the early 13th century. In the early 18th century it was still 'a humble collection of dwellings' which lay chiefly around Upper Green (at the junction of Keelings Lane and the present Town Road), and Lower Green (the later Market Square).
