But while recently sleuthing and endeavoring to learn more about the old iron bridge that inspired Canton’s name, this so-called engineer/historian has uncovered a host of conflicting facts, dates, and fanciful tales.
Schooling History. Most of Canton's settlers came from New England with its strong emphasis on education. Along with their convictions, the Territorial Council of 1827 ruled that any township consisting of 50 or more families must employ one or more school masters of "good standing" to teach the "three R's."
