The nickname Clarets, given to the club’s players, refers to the predominant colour of their home shirt, which was adopted along with blue during the 1910-1911 season in reference to the dominant club in English football at the time, Aston Villa.
Nicknamed “the Clarets” (after the dominant colour of the home shirts), they were one of the founding members of the Football League in 1888. Burnley has played home games at Turf Moor since 1883, after the club had moved from the original premises at Calder Vale.
The nickname “Turfites” alludes to the ground’s name of course whereas “Clarets” refers to the celebrated club colours. Burnley have not always played in their famous claret and blue though. The first colours were black and yellow stripes earning the club the nickname “Hornets”.
