Why England Slept (1940) is the published version of a thesis written by John F. Kennedy in his senior year at Harvard College. Its title alludes to Winston Churchill 's 1938 book Arms and the Covenant , published in the United States as While England Slept , which also examined the buildup of German power. [ 1 ]

The time at which the book is written adds something to it, at the time of writing J. F. K . did not know the outcome of WW2 and America had not yet been drawn in, but he draws comparisons in how the UK paid the price for not reacting soon enough and was asleep, he notes this as a warning to the people of the USA, as much the same could be said for the people of the USA at the time.
