Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) is a condition where your heart suddenly beats much faster than normal. It's not usually serious, but some people may need treatment.

The electrical system that controls the heart rhythm is not working properly causing the heart to beat much faster and then slow down abruptly. A normal resting heart rate is 60-100bpm, but with SVT it goes above 100bpm which can happen when you're resting or doing exercise.

Heart suddenly beats faster for a few minutes to several hours, chest pain, weak, breathless or lightheaded feeling tired feel sick or are sick; triggered by tiredness, caffeine, alcohol or drugs – often there's no obvious trigger; can happen at any age between 25 and 40 years old.

Get checked out if you have been diagnosed with an episode lasting longer than 30 minutes or sudden shortness of breath with chest pain; go to hospital immediately for treatment if needed.

If episodes only last a few minutes and do not bother you may not need treatment; make changes in lifestyle such as reducing caffeine/alcohol intake and getting enough rest; doctor may recommend simple techniques to stop episodes when they occur.

Rarely life threatening but long episodes require hospitalization for treatments like medicines through tablets/vein cardioversion small electric shock catheter ablation thin tubes placed into the heart correcting electrical system problem permanently curing most patients.

  4. A resting heart rate above 100 bpm is too fast for most people. A fast heart rate, also known as tachycardia, can be caused by health conditions. These conditions can include infection, anaemia (a lack of red blood cells carrying oxygen in your blood) and an overactive thyroid (where too many hormones are made).
