Laurie tells him about her mother’s negative response to The Wave. “She can’t possibly understand what The Wave is about unless she’s been in class to see it work,” David says. “Parents always think they know everything!” (56) Laurie disagrees, but she changes the subject and asks how David is doing in calculus.
This parallels the couple’s reaction to the Nazi film at the beginning of the book. David is able to shrug it off and enjoy his lunch, while Laurie remains disturbed for the rest of the day. David’s violence toward Laurie further demonstrates The Wave’s destruction of families.

Her description of David as an idealist is accurate. David has become so intoxicated by the movement’s false promise of community that he’s blind to its crimes. Laurie’s altercation with Brad at the football game in Chapter 13 also reveals how significantly The Wave has transformed Gordon High.
