Ben heads to University of New York and is surprised to find that a girl from his high school, Felicity, is also attending. He struggles academically and decides to get Felicity's help with his classes. He's put off when she reveals that she came to New York because of him and tells her so when she angrily blames him for her crush on him. Ben angrily retorts that they don't even know each other, frustrated with Felicity's behaviour. Simultaneously, Ben develops an attraction to Felicity's friend, Julie Emrick. They go on a date the night Felicity shows up to yell at Ben, and Julie leaves. Ben later admits to Felicity that she scares him because she challenges him with her earnestness and they make amends. Despite his and Julie's connection, she rejects him because of her friendship with Felicity, not wanting to complicate things. Ben takes a drama class to coast but the teacher expects more from him and he actually ends up getting something out of trying.
Ben becomes friends with Felicity and Julie. One night Felicity helps Ben study at The Loft and they are robbed at gunpoint. The experience brings them closer, as Ben starts sleeping on Felicity's floor, not feeling safe at home anymore. In the daytime, however, he maintains a distance from her, but they eventually make up. Felicity then rewrites an essay without his consent that Ben has trouble with and he is very angry with her. Noel convinces him to forgive Felicity, but it strains their relationship. Ben also befriends fellow freshman Blair and Ben's flatmate and landlord, Sean Blumberg. Ben and Sean attend Thanksgiving at the dorms, which Felicity hosts, where Ben sees Felicity and Noel kiss. When Christmas rolls around, everybody's freaking out over exams and Ben has trouble with a poetry class. He gets Felicity's help, but she later bails to do her own work when Noel gets jealous of her helping Ben. Ben helps Noel, who had an allergic reaction to Meghan Rotundi's Smart Powder, causing him to get jealous. Ben assures Noel that he has nothing to worry about. Ben decides to stay in New York for Christmas and supports Julie, who is still reeling from being raped. They spend the Christmas break together and start a relationship.
Ben tries to support Julie and give her advice regarding her approaching her biological mother for the first time. Meanwhile, Ben gets a spot on the school swim team and makes a new friend in fellow swimmer, Lynn McKennan. Lynn bartends at Epstein Bar and gambles on games. Ben gets tempted to gamble as well, and gets in way over his head with debt after some bad bets.
Julie Emrick
Ben and Julie are interested in each other almost immediately after being introduced. Julie finds it too difficult to cope with Felicity's larger-than-life crush on Ben, so she decides to cool things off with Ben and just be friends. Soon afterwards, Julie meets Zack, a film student at UNY and they start dating. After Zack rapes Julie, Ben is a big part of helping Julie start to feel safe again. During this time, they begin to develop feelings for each other and end up dating seriously. Julie's search for her birth mother plays a big part in their relationship and Ben tries his best to be there for Julie. After a while they seem to be on different paths and Julie feels that Ben is growing distant. She ends things with Ben, but then learns that he cheated on her with Felicity. Julie stops talking to both of them.
When sophomore year rolls around, Julie is still healing from the pain of their betrayal. When her roommates turn out to be a nightmare, Sean offers that Julie can move in to the loft. She does, despite her and Ben's estrangement. Ben starts to realise that he, Julie and Sean are like a family and makes an effort in mending their relationship so they can stay together in the loft. Julie eventually forgives Ben and they become close friends, always looking out for one another and have a deep bond. When Ben's father reappears in his life at the start of their junior year, Ben confides in Julie, showing the strength of their bond. Julie, however, has had a traumatic experience over the summer she has not shared with her friends, which they learn about on a tape Julie leaves behind as she leaves college. During their senior year, Julie visits New York and seems to be doing better. She and Ben go out on a date, but decide to just be friends. Despite this, their connection remains.
