Feb 28, 2018 · So how did Rotten Tomatoes come to be, how does its aggregator, the Tomatometer actually work and what do you need to consider when looking at the score of a movie?
Oct 24, 2017 · Rotten Tomatoes gives films a score out of 100 based on the averaged reviews of professional film critics. If a film gets a rating of 60 or more it gets a ‘fresh’ red tomato on the site.

Let’s first begin by understanding how scores are awarded on IMDb as compared to Rotten Tomatoes. I’d assume that all of you know that IMDb is completely user-driven, ratings of all films depend solely on average users who just go the website and rate movies they’ve watched. Due to this fact, you’d expect there to be some really extreme ratings, es...
Now that we’ve cleared that up, let’s discuss another movie that Rotten Tomatoes completely got wrong. The curious case of ‘Sharknado’. The longest running ‘joke’ on Rotten Tomatoes happens to be rated fresh at 82% on RT. If you aren’t familiar with the film, give it one watch and you’ll know what I’m talking about. - 'The Boondock Saints' (1999) — 64% Divide. If you haven't heard about The Boondock Saints, Rotten Tomatoes critics would say it's for the best, since its Tomatometer score on the site is a measly 27%.
- 'Venom' (2018) — 50% Divide. While critics have grown increasingly tolerant (maybe even fond) of superhero movies, Tom Hardy’s outing as Venom proved that their acceptance has limits.
- 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' (2017) — 49% Divide. The Last Jedi's measly audience score of 42%, comparable to that of critics’ 91%, can perhaps be explained by the lofty expectations of its die-hard fanbase, who just two years prior were treated to an almost-universally loved film in the nostalgia-filled The Force Awakens.
- 'Uncharted' (2022) — 49% Divide. Action movies based on video games don't have a great track record, and Uncharted was certainly not the one to break that pattern, as the 41% Tomatometer score for critics corroborates.
Apr 21, 2023 · It means that Rotten Tomatoes collects reviews from critics and audiences to calculate a score; which is quantified in the Tomatometer. This score is based on a binary principle. If a film is scored by a user as 6/10 or higher, it indicates a positive (fresh) response to the film – and if below 6/10, the film’s response is negative – i.e ...
