MU was founded in 1839 as part of the Geyer Act to establish a state land-grant university, the first west of the Mississippi River. The State Fruit Experiment Station, located in Mountain Grove, Mo., is established by Missouri Legislature. It remained a state agency until 1974, when it became part of what is now Missouri State University. Therefore, it is the oldest segment of the University. The Mountain Grove campus is now part of the University System.

The school was governed by its own board of trustees until 1955, when it became part of the Wisconsin State Colleges system as Stout State College. The state colleges were all upgraded to university status in 1965, and accordingly Stout State College became Stout State University.
A land grant for a university was made by Congress and the State University was incorporated. A large German immigration settled in Milwaukee and the eastern counties. A partially successful attempt was made to remove the Ho-Chunk to Long Prairie, Minnesota.
The Wisconsin Idea began as the principle that knowledge and education should be used to ensure that the people of the State could retain and exercise power in their government and economy. This vision, shared by the State and the University, led to Wisconsin’s rise to fame in the early 1900s.
