I thought Hiromatsu had a clue earlier. After the tsuji left to go back to Osaka with a message, Hiromatsu told the others that Toranaga is going to fight, even though that was not the impression given to the tsuji.

I think it could be because of theory 1 and 2. I think their actors were dating back then and left a bad taste between them. I agree, it wouldn't look good if they ended season 1 with them as a couple as he was still a student. If nothing bad happened between the 2 actors and he returned in season 2, I'm not sure how it would have fit in.
