Thomas Anthony Thacher was born in Hartford, Conn. in 1815. He graduated from Yale in 1835. He was Assistant Professor of Latin at Yale from 1842 to 1851, Professor from 1851 until his death in 1886. Thomas was the son of Anne (née Parks) and Peter Thacher.
Thomas embarked in the ship "James," in company with the family of his uncle, Anthony Thacher, and arrived in New England, June 4, 1635, at Ipswich.
After graduation, Thacher moved to California and took up 160 acres (0.65 km 2) of government land to plant an orange grove. In 1889, he founded the Thacher School at Ojai, California, serving as its headmaster. [ 2 ]
