Dec 21, 2020 · According to NPR, Talking Heads realized pop music was changing and started mixing up their sound. "The first time I ever met Talking Heads, I played them a record by Fela Kuti, the African-Nigerian musician who'd invented that thing called Afro-beat," Eno told NPR.
Described as "one of the most critically acclaimed bands of the '80s," Talking Heads helped to pioneer new wave music by combining elements of punk, art rock, funk, and world music with "an anxious yet clean-cut image".
The short version is that they started with jam sessions where they worked out musical ideas. Then they'd take the best bits and decide what worked best as chorus and verse for a song. Then they would develop the music more while Byrne put together palceholder sounds for the lyrics to get the rough sounds and melody until he wrote the final lyrics.
Stop Making Sense includes performances of the early Talking Heads single, "Psycho Killer" (1977), through to their most recent hit at the time, "Burning Down the House" (1983). It also includes songs from the solo career of frontman David Byrne and by Tom Tom Club , the side project of drummer Chris Frantz and bassist Tina Weymouth .
