Odin faced a significant obstacle in his quest for the well’s wisdom. Mímir, as the guardian of the well, was entrusted with its secrets and was not inclined to share them freely. Odin had to negotiate with Mímir, offering something of immense value in exchange for a drink from the well.
When he asks Mimir to take a drink, Mimir asks for one of his giants eyes as he thought that 1 Odin would never willingly give up his own eye and 2 giants eyes have their magical uses. Odin being who he is, did not even question Mimir and cut out his eye to give to Mimir.

Odin – whether straightaway or after anguished deliberation, we can only wonder – gouged out one of his eyes and dropped it into the well.
