The earliest buildings in Margate survive in the streets around the Market Place, the heart of the historic town.
From these humble beginnings the ‘House’ referred to in the advertisement, the Black Horse Inn, developed into a major hotel and Margate developed into a town with assembly rooms, subscription balls, theatres, promenades, circulating libraries, and orchestras.
