Daryll is depicted when pregnant with Joffe in Train to Vermont (2020), and with an infant in the rather awkward First Baby (2020) and the raw Fourth Baby (2020).
When my daughter was a baby I painted her, and before that I painted myself when I was pregnant. I have tried to paint our evolving relationship, and what is happening in my family now is also a subject for my work.
Today, she is recognised as being among the first female artists to paint a nude self-portrait and, later, a series of self-portraits while she was pregnant – subjects which are taken up in the Joffe paintings on show.

Feb 23, 2018 · Chantal Joffe RA’s work is about people, particularly those close to her: portraits of her partner Dan Coombs, her daughter Esme, her close friend Ishbel Myerscough, as well as a significant number of self-portraits, painted from a mirror or from photographs taken of her by Coombs. The self-portraits are therapeutic.
